Basics

 

Definition: A severe hereditary form of anemia in which a mutated form of hemoglobin distorts the red blood cells into a crescent shape at low oxygen levels.

 

Other Names:

 

HbS disease

 

Hemoglobin S disease

 

Hemoglobin SS disease

 

Sickle cell disease (a broad term that includes sickle cell anemia)

 

Sickle cell disorders (a broad group of conditions that include sickle cell anemia)

 

Sickling disorder due to hemoglobin S
