Phlebotomist

 

Education -  A phlebotomist can choose three different degree levels: bachelor's, associate's or certificate. Standard curriculum is anatomy and physiology, psychology and interpersonal communication. Each state has a different set of rules, for example, California requires that phlebotomists have completed at least 40 hours of class time, 40 hours of clinical practice,50 venipunctures and 10 skin punctures before getting licensed. Certification is required through the ASCP or NPA which are the American Society for Clinical Pathology and the National Phlebotomy Association. After certification, there will be ongoing training as well.

 

Salary -  The range for the salary of a phlebotologist is $26,297 to $37,814.

 

Daily Activities & Responsibilities 

  • Draw blood through venal puncture

  • Draw blood through arteries

  • Give injections

  • Administer IV medications

  • Set up intravenous lines

  • Communicate with patients

  • Enter data regarding patient

  • Report to nurses and doctors

 

Hematologist

 

Education -  An aspiring hematologist should obtain a bachelor's degree and then go to a medical school for 4 years. After this is completed, a 2-6 year residency with an internal medicine department should be completed. The last thing to do is a fellowship for 3 years.

 

Salary - The salary for a hematologist is around $245,000 to $685,000 per year.

 

Daily Activities & Responsiblities

  • Looks at blood and bone marrow slides

  • Analyzes hematology test results

  • Prescribes oral medication, blood transfusions and bone marrow transplants

  • Treat patients with blood disorders like leukemia and anemia

  • Examines patient's medical history.

 

Clinical Pathologist

 

Education - After getting a bachelor's degree, the aspiring clinical pathologist will have to take the MCAT and then earn a medical degree.After this, there will be 4-5 hours of residency training and then certification examinations.

 

Salary - The salary for a clinincal pathologist is around $126,000 - $150,000.

 

Daily Activities & Responsibilities

  • Conducts lab tests on body fluids.

  • Ensures that blood and blood products are safe. 

  • Identify microorganisms that can cause infections

 

 

Blood Bank Technology Specialist

 

Education - First, an aspiring blood bank technology specialist must get a bachelor's degree with a major in biology, microbiology or another biological or physical science certification and then enroll in a specialized training program for one year. They may also choose to pursue a master's degree.

 

Salary - The average salary is around $50,000 to $60,000.

 

Daily Activities & Responsibilities

  • To identify blood types and antibodies

  • Tests blood for viruses

  • Investigates harmful responses of the body to blood transfusion

  • Supervises the collection, separation, delivery and storage of blood components

  • Supports  physicians and nurses in blood transfusion therapy
