What is blood?
Living tissue composed of blood cells suspended in plasma.
How much blood is in our body?
The amount of blood in our bodies depends on the size of a person, their state of hydration, and the volume of white blood cells and red blood cells in the blood. The average amount is 5.5 liters.
Why is blood red?
Blood is red because it has iron in it. Iron is found in the protein hemoglobin.
Where does blood come from?
Blood cells are produced in the bone marrow and the spleen.
What are the main components of blood?
Red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets, and plasma.
What are red blood cells?
Red blood cells carry oxygen and release it into the tissues of the body. They have a protein called hemoglobin that is the actual part of the red blood cell that carries the oxygen. They have no nucleus, and can survive around 120 days.
What are white blood cells?
The main function of white blood cells are to fight infection. They make up around 1% of the blood. They have a very short lifespan of around 1 to 3 days.
What are platelets?
Cells that circulate in our blood that bind together when they recognize damaged blood vessels.
What is plasma?
The liquid portion of the blood.
What's the main difference between white blood cells and red blood cells?
Red blood cells carry oxygen and white blood cells fight infection.
What is the most common blood disorder?
Anemia.
What is the blood's pH level?
The blood's pH level is between 7.35 and 7.45.
